THE LEGAL NOTICE GAME

In Rahway, citizens can get their news from two local sources: The RAHWAY PROGRESS, published by the Worrall family, or the NEWS-RECORD published by Jim Devine.

The lead story in last week's PROGRESS was about the City Council not placing legal notices in their paper. Legal notices are those tiny print ads that governing bodies must take out by law in local newspapers. The notices warn residents about meetings, job openings, call for bids, budgets, etc.

The ads aren't free, so they can get expensive. That's why the state sets a low rate for newspapers to use in charging governments.

In Rahway, however, the City Council places its ads in the NEWS-RECORD. This paper, unlike the PROGRESS, charges the Council full price for its notices. Yet the Council puts ads in this paper, and not the PROGRESS. Why?

Well, the Council (and Mayor Kennedy) is majority County Democratic. Jim Devine, publisher of the RECORD, is a party operative. Of course, his paper always glosses over the truth to make his friends look good. Get it?

Once again, the taxpayers are paying for the political games of elected officials. Too bad the PROGRESS couldn't, or wouldn't, make this connection between its "competitor" and the County political machine.
