FOLLOWING ITSELF

Several weeks after the HILLSIDE CITIZEN-DISPATCH broke the Philadelphia Inquirer story about the Billboard scandal in Hillside, the residents of Hillside finally got the opportunity to read the news in print.

Following criticism by the DISPATCH and this column of the local press' apparent "news embargo" on the scandal, one of the local papers finally published the news.

Just a few weeks ago, the same local paper that this week ran the story claimed that the scandal was a "state issue" and not newsworthy for the Worrall publication, this column reported.

Why the sudden change of heart? Clearly the local press is following themselves on this column right along with the rest of us.

COVERT REFERENCES

A Gazette Leader opinion piece in the August 21 edition makes several hidden references to this column and others who care enough about truth and factual information to criticize the paper's coverage.

At least the criticism is making some improvement. But if that newspaper's editor insists on dishing it out, it should learn how to take it as well.

In response to allegations that the newspaper continually misquotes people, this column offers their reporters some advice: use a tape recorder so that way you don't find yourselves putting words into people's mouths.
