COVERING THE COUNTY

The Star-Ledger has been reporting fearlessly on the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Take a recent article on the County's tax hike, which actually reports that the County raised taxes! It even extensively quotes Elizabeth Councilman Bob Jaspan, the one-man opposition to the city's "Democratic" machine.

But we shall see the extent of this reporting as Election Day approaches. So far, the paper has pretty much ignored independent candidate for Freeholder Joe Renna, who is the Democrats' toughest opponent.

Renna has been riding a grass-roots movement of Republicans, Democrats, and independents that are showing deep discontent with the all-Democrat Freeholder board. Yet, no mention in the press.

Last year, the Ledger devoted more inches in a Freeholder campaign article to bash Republican candidate Anira Clericuzio for not revealing her age than to actually quoting her on real issues. Talk about giving people news that they can use . . .
