THE EDITORIAL BOARD
Who writes those editorials in the Gazette-Leader and Worrall newspapers?
Newspaper editorials are unsigned opinion pieces that are supposed to reflect the viewpoint or philosophy of a newspaper. But an editorial can't be written by a newspaper - a person has to write it.
The Gazette-Leader editorials, for instance, are mostly written by the managing editor, who is the same person that does the reporting on Hillside. County pieces are sometimes written by the regional editor, who is also the reporter covering county news.
Is this ethical for supposedly "unbiased", "fair" journalists who are not supposed to take a "side" to go ahead an write opinions? That's up for debate. But it surely allows the reporters to vent - which is a good thing when the "venting" allows readers to gain deeper insight into the news.
But the newspaper should fess up to this and not pretend that the reporter has no opinions and that the "editorial board" magically writes the editorials.
COUNTY CHEMICAL COVER-UP
When the County Freeholders authorized the chemical spraying of insecticides in Kenilworth, it forgot one thing: to warn the residents.
Because of this gaffe, an elderly man had to be transported to the emergency room and have his body and clothes decontaminated.
People read about this on the internet and heard it from their neighbors, but . . . nothing from the newspapers.
