Hillside Students Continue to Score Higher on Math
By Ambrose Bierce, Editor in Chief
The results are in and so far they're looking good.
Hillside fourth graders scored 28 per cent higher than last year in math, the Superintendent is revealing.
This 28 percent jump comes after a 37 percent increase in 4th grade math during the previous year. Meanwhile, language arts scores remain stable after years of "strong increases", school administration says.
"Schools all over the state will be looking at how we did it in Hillside because they're all struggling with math," Deidre Simon, the district elementary education director, stated.
Explaining the improvement, Superintendent Raymond Bandlow indicated four strategies implemented by the district: adopting the Everyday Math curriculum; coaching and supervising teachers by principals; professionally coaching teachers and grade-level collaboration; and having teachers track the progress of each child.
The state has yet to release a detailed analysis of test scores, but the raw numbers that district administrators obtained show that George Washington scored the highest among the elementary schools this year. Hurden-Looker obtained the highest scores last year and Calvin Coolidge students have shown the largest improvement overall.
