Corporate Partnerships Key to Aiding Schools
By Ambrose Bierce, Editor-in-Chief
With the state government cutting more and more tax relief to school districts, Hillside has had to look elsewhere for funds.
"We can't keep taxing homeowners, so administrators have been looking for creative ways to come up with the revenue," school board member Nathalie Yafet told the DISPATCH.
This includes partnering with the Merck pharmaceutical company and its Institute for Science Education. Merck is sponsoring a school event at Liberty Science Center to celebrate the district's receiving of a 5-year $5 million science grant.
Schering-Plough is another company that has shown interest in helping Hillside schools. Recently it donated a high-powered microscope valued at $12,000 to the high school's Engineering Preparatory School. Administrators say that the company will continue to assist the prep school in any way it can.
