Airing the Dirty Laundry

Hillside's cable channel 35 seems pretty empty these days.

After promising countless times to put the Township Council meetings on the air, the meetings are still not shown.

The Council once hid behind the excuse that broadcasting the meetings would be expensive. This excuse stopped once citizen activists exposed how this was a lie. Broadcasting meetings, or anything else on Channel 35 is free. This is the agreement made between the cable companies and local governments. Each town gets a free public access channel from the cable company in exchange for allowing the company to wire the town with their cable.

But the Council still refuses to air the meetings. It must be because they are afraid of citizens seeing what goes on at them. If meetings were easily shown on TV, citizens might get the impression that government should be open and that they should have a say in how the town is governed. This is the stuff of politicians' nightmares!
