State Owes Answers: Money Missing Under Eliz Pol's Watch

The Elizabeth Reporter, August 28, 2003

Some years ago, the Star-Ledger reported the incident of the missing quarter of a million dollars that was given to the Simon Bolivar School in Newark for which, according to the testimony of school officials, no goods or supplies had ever been purchased for the school.

At that time, it was reported that some $288,000 had been placed in the trust of Carlos Alma, an Elizabeth City Councilman who was then connected with the school's administration and whose explanation for the missing funds was ambiguous at best. The Star-Ledger reported that the matter was turned over to the state for its investigation.

Efforts to ascertain information regarding the status of the investigation since then have been fruitless.

The disappearance of $288,000 entrusted to the care of an individual engaged in the administrators of school operations is something that taxpayers do not find it easy to dismiss from mind.

Unless and until the forgoing matter has been brought to the proper closure, those in Trenton whose duty it is to exact an accounting for misdeeds and negligence have betrayed the people.

Failure to institute appropriate action in matters such as this do nothing but to further reinforce the perception that New Jersey is one of the most corrupt states in the Union.

Copies of this item are being directed to appropriate state officials with the request that information pertinent to the disposition of the foregoing matter be made known to both the Elizabeth Reporter and the Star-Ledger.
