At Town Hall, Mum's the Word on Scandals
As Hillside's involvement with Gov. McGreevey's billboard scandal continues to develop, the Town Council is keeping tight-lipped about the possible wrongdoing.
Councilmember Gerald Freedman attempted to seek answers at last week's meeting, but to no avail. Council President Sam McGhee refused to allow Township Attorney Dwayne Warren to give Freedman the answers he sought.
Councilmember Jorge Batista, ignoring McGhee's apparent attempt to stifle Freedman's fact-finding, requested that each Councilmember be sent a memo clarifying Hillside's involvement in any investigation.
The scandal stems from a billboard deal Town Hall made without referring to the zoning board for approval and without seeking competitive bids. The billboard was then approved by the state after an operative of the Union County Democratic Party - which controls Hillside's Town Hall - urged a state official to bypass approval protocol.
