The Mayor's Cuz
What are Township Attorney Dwayne Warren's qualifications for being the Township Council's legal counsel?
Well, there's the fact that he's a relative of the Mayor. No surprise there. And he's also good at actively campaigning for the Mayor and her Council-mates. All this has earned Mr. Warren and his legal firm pricey no-bid contracts from the Township of Hillside.
But is Hillside getting what it's paying for?
When Councilmember Gerald Freedman asked if the billboard company that Hillside did business with was in any way involved with the state scandal - Mr. Warren assured him that no it was not.
This was clearly not the case.
Mr. Warren, who also doubles as the Council and Mayor's press agent, then told the newspapers that the billboard deal was a good one for Hillside.
Again, this was not the case.
We would have hoped that the Township Council would have questioned Mr. Warren after he gave his thumbs up on the billboard deal. But instead, Council President Sam McGhee is refusing to have any questions asked or answered.
We hope that the Township Council will give Mr. Warren's firm the boot if it is indeed affirmed that he led the Township into a bad deal, but that may be wishful thinking. Mr. Warren is supposed to be Township Attorney, but he really is a political agent of Town Hall's political machine. In fact, he has been used by Town Hall politicians to craft thinly veiled legal threats against Hillside residents who dare criticize or speak out in opposition to the Council's practices.
Is Hillside getting what it's paying for? Well, what happens at Town Hall is a result of the will of the people of Hillside. Voters are the ones who return these politicians to power term after term. So a better question would be: Is Hillside getting what it deserves?
