Politicians Run Unopposed in Tuesday's Election
On Tuesday, voters in each of Hillside's four wards will have no choice but to re-elect their councilman.
Unless, that is, they opt to "write-in" a candidate of their choice. This possibility apparently has the Democratic Party machine nervous, as it pumped out cash to stuff Hillside mailboxes with last-minute, high-color campaign literature.
In the first, second, third, and fourth wards councilmen Joe Pinckney, Sam McGhee, John Kulish, and Gerald "Pateesh" Freedom, respectively, are running without opposition.
Pinckney, McGhee, and Kulish - who are backed by the party machine - appeared in newsletter-styled flier titled "The Hillside Report", claiming that they have been lowering taxes while increasing services.
Freedman, who in the last two years has been the one-man opposition on the council, told the DISPATCH that taxpayers are smart enough to understand that the Council has done very little to ease the property taxes.
