Something you probably already guessed. It was no coincidence that the "biggest" event in Hillside's 90th Anniversary celebrations occurred just before the municipal elections. In fact, it was planned that way.
Somehow, even free hotdogs and a fifteen minute display of firecrackers couldn't bring up the election totals past the farcically low 500 mark.
The Council is known for its pre-election songs and dances. Two years ago, Mayor Oliver mailed out official letters detailing all the hard work she and the Council had been up to. The letters, of course, arrived just days before her election.
And then there was the Council's "investigation" of the former administration. It was so "important", but not important enough that the Council waited months before establishing a committee. The "search" began, ironically, just in time for the mayoral race.

HSPD Green: How Many Cops Does it Take to Patrol a Picnic?
Was it COUNTY police officers and vehicles that the DISPATCH spotted at last month's Conant Park picnic for Hillside's 90th Anniversary?
Sure was, and sources close to the Town Council tell this website that Hillside taxpayers had to foot the bill for the extra police presence.
The DISPATCH has been unable to ascertain the rationale of employing County police services when the Township employs over seventy police officers of its own - many of who would have volunteered their time to patrol the tranquil celebration.
Fortunately, the costs of the picnic and that evening's fireworks were largely defrayed through corporate donations.
