STILL OUR ONLY VOICE

Ward Four Councilman Gerald "Pateesh" Freedman continues to be the only Councilman that stands up for the taxpayers and residents of Hillside.

He is the only councilman questioning the council pay raise and the only councilman who has so far voted against it.

For this, other councilmen have attacked him.

Council President Sam McGhee told the Star-Ledger that Freedman does not do any work, that he only "shows up for meetings".

But if McGhee really wanted Freedman to do more "work", McGhee should consider appointing Freedman to some of the Council committees. Of course, McGhee hasn't and won't. McGhee doesn't want Freedman to do any work - that's the whole point. Freedman may be shut out from the inner circle, but he still has done more to represent the people of his and other wards and for that we thank him.

The Council's Audacity

Nobody more than the Councilmembers and their families are pleased to award Town Hall politicians a raise.

After all, they are Councilmen and they are entitled to anything, regardless of whether or not taxpayers are able to, or even should, afford it.

That is exactly the mode of thinking by our elected officials. In just about any other profession, if an employee were to perform in the way that these politicians serve residents, the employee would be out of a job. But Hillside Councilmen feel that they are entitled to a reward, even if they have very little to show for their years of "public service" other than hoodwinking voters into reelecting them.

The Councilmembers - most audibly Council President Sam McGhee and Ward One Councilman Joe Pinckney, and At-Large Councilman Peter Corvelli - claim that they put in many hours and incur many expenses.

At a public meeting, a family member of Pinckney complained that the councilman is always on the job helping people.

But many wonder: well, isn't that the reason why he ran for office? To help people? Didn't he know that a Councilmember did not earn much when he sought reelection last May? These are all logical questions, but do not bother asking them of the Council for they will simply shout you down and laugh. After all, they're councilmen.
