Rally Against Train, County Freeholders on Monday

On Monday, August 25, the Coalition to Stop the Train, a grassroots citizen group based in Kenilworth, will hold a rally at David Brearley High School to protest the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholder's decision to reactivate the freight rail line through several suburban towns in Union County.

The group criticizes the plan for its "adverse effects on . . . quality of life".

Among those, the group explains, will be: traffic problems, noise and diesel pollution, depreciation of property values, safety of residents and children in backyards and parks adjacent to the line, interference with emergency services, and the possible risks of an accident during the transport of hazardous chemicals along the rail.

The county Freeholders and the rail company are also being sued by several of the municipalities through which the rail passes.

The County has been accused of lying to the public about the reactivation, telling residents that they would not reopen the line when in fact they were planning it all along.

Following the Coalition's rally at 6:30, the County will hold a Public Outreach Meeting regarding the rail reactivation of the Rahway Valley and Staten Island Railroads.

Both will take place at the high school on Monroe Avenue.
