YOUR Opinion:
How the Township Shuts Out Children

Dispatched by citizen Toy-Ling Washington

I am happy that the people of Hillside enjoyed the Night Out, but do they realize that there was a group of Hillside residents who were not invited? Well, they are the children of the Hillside drill team. I started this drill team because the children of Hillside wanted a drill team that was not run by town hall bureaucracy, which is destroying the activities for the children.

For the past two years, the children have had to endure the township's attitude, one that does not allow the children to use the Community Center, or any of the public facilities or parks other than the one on Hillside Avenue.

These children went to a Township Council meeting and were not given any relief. Still they practice rain or shine, but in the grass because they are not welcome in the Community Center. We need to acknowledge that there are children who want to do more than run after sex and drugs, and support their efforts to do something positive. But the Township Council will only listen to three residents living next to the Community Center who do not want to hear the "noise" of children playing safely.
